Are you a year 6 teacher?

We are inviting you to participate in a research project we are undertaking at the Institute of Education, supported by the Nuffield Foundation and the Standards and Testing Agency, to study the Key Stage 2 tests in Mathematics. As you may know the tests are currently undergoing many changes and we are interested to learn how the tests in general, and these changes in particular, affect the teaching in Year 6 in your school.

It is our aim to get an overview of potential strategies teachers are using to prepare students for the test. We would like to say explicitly that in our view there are no good or wrong answers or strategies here, as some strategies may be beneficial in some situations for some students, and others will be more harmful.

We simply aim to provide an overview of potential strategies teachers are using and discuss (using a structured literature review) the extent to which these are potentially harmful or beneficial to promoting students’ understanding of mathematics.

We will not connect these strategies to your school or to you and interview results will remain anonymous.

We ask your participation in two interviews, one in February/March 2015 and one in June 2016 and will do our best to schedule each interview at a convenient time and not to interrupt daily school life. Interviews will last for 1.5 hour and you will be reimbursed for your time with a small fee of 160 pounds.

We will ask your approval in recording the interview. This is only for our understanding and to allow us to concentrate on the interview instead of on making notes. You can ask us to stop recording at any time during the interview. In our recording of interview data we will use unique personal identifiers where identification information will be stored on a password encrypted computer to ensure that your records can not be identified.

We would like to explicitly inform you that you may withdraw from the interview at any time without explanation.

You will also be invited to advisory board meetings and a seminar in which we will share the findings. We are hoping your participation in the study will benefit your school, as your involvement will enable you to learn from other colleagues from other schools, as well as learn from us about the changes in the tests and effective ways to prepare students for them.

Please let us know if you have any questions or want to discuss any concerns before you agree to participate in our study. We can be contacted via email We are happy to answer any questions you may have. More information can also be found on this project website.

Please do let us know through the sign up form on the right of this page if you are willing to participate in the research.

Thanking you in anticipation.
